Sony’s 3DTVs Promise to Be Cheaper Than Panasonic’s When They Go On Sale In June [3D Tv]

Both Samsung and Panasonic will be flogging 3DTVs in the US by the end of the month, but don’t expect to see anything from Sony until June at least. Details on the LX900, HX900 and HX800 do sound tantalizing however. Japan will start selling the sets on June 10th, with the rest of the world expected to follow suit sometime soon after. Already Sony’s making the bold claim that they’ll be much cheaper than Panasonic’s 3DTV sets—in Japan, anyway

Samsung Sells the Most Flat Panels, But Vizio Is Lurking [Sales]

In 2009, Samsung’s shipments of flat panel TVs (plasmas and LCDs) rose 22.6%, making them the number one US supplier, moving 6.6 million televisions in all. But you know who grew way, way, way more? Vizio. Between 2008 and 2009, Vizio nearly doubled their US sales, which grew 92.1% as the company sold 5.9 million TVs—that’s nearly one out of every five LCDs sold, or enough for them to claim the title as #1 in LCDs.

Apple Now Has a Patent on Their Capacitive Multitouch Displays [Patents]

This can’t be good for anyone but Apple—a patent app filed in 2004 has been granted for their capacitive multitouch display. The patent is not necessarily all-encompassing, but it appears to be quite encompassing. The abstract explains the patent generally addresses: “A touch panel having a transparent capacitive sensing medium configured to detect multiple touches or near touches that occur at the same time…” Apple’s touchscreen is still the best in the entire smartphone market , and while the implications of this patent are still unclear, it’s certainly hard to imagine it helping any other companies close that gap

Samsung’s the biggest TV maker in the world. It beat Sony 4 years ago. But it’s getting even bigger . Soon it will pass 20 percent marketshare, which the WSJ points out is “a threshold not reached by any manufacturer since the earliest days of the industry more than 60 years ago.” Think about that
